Both brought together students and emerging professionals from six European countries to address sustainability challenges in the textile and fashion sector, combining academic sessions, company visits, practical workshops, and collaborative activities.

The visit in Terrassa, coordinated by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), stood out for its comprehensive approach to sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility. Participants visited leading facilities such as INTEXTER and benchmark companies like Teixidors and Roba Amiga, showcasing the feasibility of circular models and social integration in textile waste management.

One of the highlights was the Ecodesign Hackathon, where multidisciplinary teams redesigned everyday textile products applying eco-design strategies throughout the entire product life cycle. Multidisciplinary teams worked collaboratively to redesign everyday textile products by applying eco-design strategies across the entire product life cycle. This hands-on activity strengthened teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking, while translating sustainability theory into practical solutions.

Academic contributions, including the lecture delivered by UPC experts, further enriched participants’ understanding of sustainable innovation and international cooperation in the textile sector.

The study visit to Pforzheim, coordinated by ITKAM and VDMD, focused on ecological, social, and economic sustainability in the German textile industry. Highlights included visits to companies such as KM Klaus Modelle and Trigema, leaders in local production, circular economy, and renewable energy use. Creative hubs like EMMA and the integration of artificial intelligence in sustainable design were also explored.

Practical workshops on digital pattern recognition and AI applications in fashion allowed attendees to experiment with cutting-edge tools to reduce material consumption and optimize processes. Organizational challenges were overcome thanks to the commitment of the organizing team and the value of cultural exchange, while maintaining a strong focus on the quality of technical content.

Elaborating Participants’ Perceptions

Overall participant feedback for the two study visits, when considered together, was clearly positive and demonstrates a strong perceived value of the FEA- VEE programme for academic and professional development.

Summarizing the results, around three-quarters of participants rated the study visits as good to excellent, with the remaining evaluations mainly falling into a very small minority expressing recommendations for improvements. The Spanish visit significantly strengthened the overall results, as it received exclusively positive ratings (excellent or good), while the German visit showed a broader distribution of responses, including some neutral or critical assessments.

In terms of usefulness, approximately 75–80% of participants across both visits considered the experiences useful or very useful for their academic and professional development. The remaining participants mainly indicated moderate usefulness, particularly in relation to the German visit, where some activities were perceived as less directly linked to sustainability.

Logistics, organization, and communication were rated very highly overall, especially during the Spanish visit, where almost all participants awarded the highest possible score. Arguably, the combined evaluations, preserve a strongly positive perception, while also indicating room for improvement in coordination and clarity in international contexts.

Across both countries, the most valued elements were company visits, practical workshops, and networking opportunities. Flagship activities such as the Ecodesign Hackathon in Spain and the visits to Trigema and the EMMA Creative Centre in Germany were consistently highlighted. At the same time, participants expressed a desire for a clearer and more explicit link between design-oriented activities and sustainability objectives, particularly in the German programme.

Conclusion

Both study visits offered complementary and enriching learning experiences. Strengths consistently highlighted by participants included the intercultural dimension, opportunities for networking, and direct engagement with companies and professionals in the textile and fashion industry.

While the Spanish visit was noted for its excellent organization and strong sustainability focus, the German visit provided valuable insights into industrial scale, digitalization, and technological innovation. Together, they underscored the importance of social innovation, teamwork, and practical, collaborative learning formats.

Overall, the combined experiences reinforced FEA-VEE’s mission to build a European network of excellence in training, innovation, and textile sustainability. By integrating practical, industrial, and digital approaches within a culturally diverse framework, these study visits contribute to driving the sector’s transformation toward more responsible, resilient, and competitive models.

During 2025, two experiences took place: the first in Terrassa (Spain) and the second in Pforzheim (Germany).
